Co-operation

National and international co-operation is an essential part of the work aiming to prevent proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The international co-operation is governed by norms and agreements. On a national level, co-operation takes place informally as well as in formal bodies.
Several Swedish authorities are involved in countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. A large part of this work has to do with information gathering and communication of information. The Inspectorate of Strategic Products, the Nuclear Power Inspectorate, the Board of Customs, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, the Armed Forces and the Security Service participate in this work. The Inspectorate of Strategic Products and the Nuclear Power Inspectorate also exercise export control. Moreover, the Nuclear Power Inspectorate and the Swedish Defence Research Agency participate in various support projects aiming to assist other countries with e.g. security measures, control functions and destruction sites.

Swedish authorities working together in the Small Reference Group

The Small Reference Group provides a forum for more formalised co-operation. The group was set up in 1992 to promote contact and facilitate the exchange of information between Swedish authorities. It is convened twice a year by the Security Service. The following authorities are part of the group:
  • The National Defence Radio Establishment
  • The Armed Forces
  • The National Inspectorate of Strategic Products
  • The Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB)
  • The Coast Guard
  • The National Criminal Investigation Department
  • The Maritime Administration
  • The National Board of Health and Welfare
  • The Radiation Safety Authority
  • The Rescue Services Agency
  • The Security Service
  • The  Defence Research Agency
  • The Board of Customs

Some of the above authorities are also part of a smaller group, where they have closer contact and work together on operative issues.

International co-operation

On the international level, the Security Service co-operates with other security and intelligence services. We also participate in the work of several coordinating bodies, such as:
  • The Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR);
  • The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG);
  • The Australia Group; and
  • The Wassenaar Arrangement.
