Changed threat level

2010-10-01 |
The threat to Sweden of a terrorist attack has recently changed. Responding to this situation, Anders Danielsson, Director General of the Swedish Security Service, has decided to raise the threat level by one step as regards terrorism targeting Sweden. The terrorist threat level has been raised from low to elevated. It should be emphasised that the threat to Sweden is not currently assessed to be imminent.
The decision to raise the threat level by one step is based on an assessment produced by the National Centre for Terrorist Threat Assessment (NCT). According to their analysis, there is currently an elevated threat of a terrorist attack against Sweden. The NCT have previously assessed the terrorist threat to Sweden as low, but now make an adjustment. New assessments are produced continuously and the threat level may be changed back to its previous level.

It should be emphasised that the threat is not currently assessed to be imminent. Compared to the situation in several other European countries, the threat level to Sweden is still low.

As the Security Service has previously announced that the threat level to Sweden is low, we consider it important also to make public this raise in the threat level.

The assessment is based on intelligence indicating a shift in activities among certain groups in Sweden, judged to be targeted at Sweden.

The Security Service is taking comprehensive measures to acquire further information and to reduce the threat. Given the nature of our operational work, we are unable to make any explicit comments on what measures we are currently taking and how further information is being gathered.

The assessment of the terrorist threat to Sweden is based on classified information. As a result, we cannot provide any detailed accounts of this information or present specific details contained in the assessment.

The threat level scale:
1. No threat
2. Low threat
3. Elevated threat
4. High threat
5. Very high threat
