Press conference summary 16. dec 2010

2010-12-16 |
The Swedish Security Service press conference on Thursday revealed that the investigation of the act of terror performed in Stockholm continues. Many hundreds of tips have been submitted by the public and many witnesses have been interviewed. Forensics are currently processing the collected material to secure any traces and the post-mortem has been completed.
According to Agnetha Hilding Qvarnström, the public prosecutor who is heading the preliminary investigation, the investigation is conducted in close cooperation with other authorities, both Swedish and foreign.

Traces have been secured both at the scene of the vehicle detonation and in Bryggargatan, where the suicide bomber detonated his explosive device. The material will be analysed in its entirety.

"One must take into consideration that there are great amounts of material that must be analysed and that this takes time", says Agnetha Hilding Qvarnström.

The explosives which are to be analysed contain elements that have not detonated and this calls for great caution. It is of paramount interest to know what types of explosives that were used to enable investigators to determine the modus operandi.

The post-mortem of the perpetrator has been completed but his identity has not yet been 100 % established. The process of mapping his life continues and the audio file sent before the acts is being analysed by experts.

"Swedish police are working hard to promote safety and security and we would like to encourage the public to continue to submit their tips", says Anders Thornberg, Swedish Security Service Head of Operations.

According to Anders Thornberg, around 400 tips have been submitted by the public and the Security Service will go through them all. However, the Security Service is not able to provide all those who have submitted tips with feedback.

The Swedish Security Service is working 24/7 with this investigation and the organisation has been adjusted to the function called special event. This means that the investigative process is separated from the Security Service ordinary work and that the investigative work can continue at the same pace for a long period of time.

The Security Service has obtained back up from special resources; seven explosives experts from FBI have for instance come from the US to Stockholm to assist. These experts have access to the world´s most comprehensive explosives database. Investigators from the UK are also assisting the investigation.

According to Anders Thornberg the scene of the vehicle detonation has been examined and interesting findings have been made. In his view, the Security Service has a good notion of which type of explosive that was used.

The Swedish threat assessment level was raised in October and the Security service sees no reason to rais it further at present. Threat assessment analyses are made continuously with the assistance of the National Center for Terrorist Threat Assessment (NCT).
